Groundhog Things.

Brian and I started an awesome Valentine’s Day tradition last year: ZooPals.

This year, we ordered our ZooPals a couple of weeks ago, and our packets came last week. We already knew what they were, so we decided to open them early (also, I won’t be here for Valentine’s Day). I got Brian a polar bear, and he got me an otter!

Zoo Pals VALENTINE OTTER

Brian and I thought about going to Detroit to watch the Cavs play the Pistons Friday night, but we didn’t buy cheap tickets soon enough. Instead, I went with Kim to a painting class. Everyone paints (pretty much) the same picture along with the teacher. I did not want to go, but I ended up really enjoying it. Here are some pictures that I took for Chiara during the class (the canvas was blank/white when we came in, but the teacher had traced the circle for the moon in pencil ahead of time):

Sky TREE Almost done Finished Painting

When Kim brought me home after the class, she came in so we could look at the photobook I made for our trip to Punxsutawney in 2010. What a fun and cold time we had then!

Saturday morning, Brian and I woke up early and tried to watch the live feed from Punx on the internet, but it was choppy and disappointing (I was told later that The Weather Channel had extensive coverage of the Knob, and I’m not sure why I was such a dimwit who didn’t think of that). At any rate, here’s the proclamation:

Punxsutawney Phil 2013

Brian got me a new FM transmitter for my car, and he also got me pretty flowers and a balloon full of helium (suck it, shortage!):

Birthday Balloon and Flowers

Brian also made me some delicious buffalo burgers for my birthday dinner (both days this weekend, actually!)

Here’s a slutty cat enjoying the fireplace heat:

Hot slutty cat

We watched the Super Bowl, yadayada.

Today, the shirts came in for the Komen Lady Rocket game. Like any normal person (?), I ordered 60 of them for whoever my dad and I can con into paying $5 for a shirt and ticket. My dad is a peach and picked them up for me on his way home from work and dropped them off at our house. I counted them and gave him his share and kept the ones I need to give to my peeps. Here’s what the shirt looks like:

Komen Game shirt

It’s kind of weird that I sort of enjoy this sort of shirt distributing/organizing…it only really comes into play with this Komen game and the Marching MilliCUREies team/shirts. If only I could make a totally enjoyable career out of it, or have similar enthusiasm for making a dent in my fatness…

In other downtrodden t-shirt-related news, my estranged mother sent me a present for my birthday (in addition to a birthday text and the card included in the package that included a(nother) keepsake bookmark):

Kiss my ass.

RAAAAAGE.

No, thanks, I do not want a shirt (that is too small because I’m disgusting) from the shitty trashball Walmart ZZ-Top-trashball-dude town you live in. BOOOOOOOOOOO LEAVE ME ALONE BOOOOOOOOOO. WHY WOULD A PERSON SEND SUCH A TERRIBLE PRESENT? OH HERE’S A SHIRT TO REMIND YOU WHERE MY AWESOME NEW MONEY-WASTEY SUPER AWESOME (AHAHAHAH) LIFE IS! YAY.

Lady Rockets

Thursday night, the Ladies beat Ohio U, and Naama broke the all-time assist record for Toledo. Yay SuperJew Yay! <3 The Ladies beat Western yesterday at a special noon game (so we could all get ready for some intense Super Bowling later in the day). Before the games, fans are allowed to form a tunnel that the players run through when they come out of the locker room. Brian and I have participated in this approximately 3 times, maybe, but I love this picture (that I did not take) so much: I heart this picture

UT Men at Ball State

So off to Muncie we went…the new route 24 is a delight, though it makes me quite sad to think about all the people who suddenly got a big gross highway through their yard or farm or whatever. I hear from people in the know that it shaved an hour (?) off of Toledo to Ft. Wayne. Hooray for everyone, I suppose.

Bossman said we had to leave at 2:30 so he’d have time to get dinner somewhere besides the arena before the game. I’m not sure what he was thinking, because when we got to Muncie, he said, “WE NEED TO GO TO THE ARENA NOW, I CANNOT STAND IT!” The doors opened at 6, and we kind of milled about for 5 minutes and were probably the first people in. We had to pick up his schmoozy tickets at player will-call. From there, I received the most thorough purse-rummaging-through that I’ve ever seen (I had to take my purse OFF and then open it and show the lady with the paint stirstick and rubber gloves what was in the pockets…?). Oh, wait, I was wrong before…we were probably the 2nd and 3rd people in, because we ran into a weird mumbling toothless dude right after we entered. Here’s a picture of him I took later in the game. He was sitting in the student section, and Bossman kept calling him my boyfriend:

Weird Guy

Also of note: these dancer girls had weird short sparkly dresses on during the first half of the game with weird white ill-fitting panties hanging out. They did a lot more dancing than the Rockettes, and NOT ONE had a visible tramp stamp (though there were a lot of navel piercings, which negates Brian’s argument that they were too young for tramp stamps). One had an obvious black thong showing above the waistband of those black pants they had on in the second half. So trashy. Also trashy: the student section heckling the visiting team. Just watch the game, asshats.

Anyway, of course we were the only UT fans there, minus the coaches’ families. We had front row seats right behind the UT bench.

Here are some pictures of Worthen Arena, which is octagonal and sort of barn-like:

Here’s the high ceiling:

I always enjoy the mascots from other schools. The cardinal rides a weird scooter thing around:

Here’s a picture from a time out…we probably should have drawn up some plays:

We were in the front row.

The Rockets won, which was a relief…I’m quite sure the 3+ hour drive back would have been rather unpleasant with disappointed/pissed off Bossman.

Oh, nothing, just going to watch a men’s basketball game in Muncie with my boss in a couple of hours…

I was originally supposed to be off Thursday and Friday this week, since I worked last weekend, but I was able to weasel into having yesterday and today off. This is the first time in several years that I didn’t take a week off to mope about being old for my birthday, but it’s probably for the best that I’m not having an extended mope-a-thon anyway. I’ve been doing enough SAD moping lately.

I agreed to go to Ball State with Bossman to watch the men play tonight. Brian is in Marion and is going from there to Tiffin to have dinner with his parents for his mom’s birthday, so I figure this way, I’ll at least go on an adventure. I am going to Ball State by myself in a couple weeks for the Ladies’ game on my way to Indianapolis for work, so at least I’ll know where I’m going.

Anyway, I don’t have much news, so I’ll just throw some random things out there for your enjoyment…

1) This picture of Naama makes me chuckle whenever I look at it:

HAHAHAHA

2) Spin it, DJ Cat

and

NO! DON'T GO!

3) Friday night, poor Mary had to drive up to Toledo after work so she could go to a funeral Saturday morning. Because of the Case of the Mystery Vernor’s Can, no one had a key to her parents’ house, so we got to have her stay in the Yellow Room. She brought me the birthday presents that the twins sent for me:

My presents

There was also a giraffe tail on a string for the cats to play with, which they have all played with and enjoyed. The Tiger in the picture is a Zoo Pooper…you wind him up and he poops out candy.

4) When I just went out in the main room to take a picture of my toys, Alley demanded that I take a picture of her:

Alley McKitten

5) Saturday, my dad brought over SO MUCH PORK! which I cooked during the Lady Rocket game. There really was SO MUCH PORK! – it was a 4 pound pork loin that he got on special at Kroger. I googled recipes and ended up baking it in the oven with garlic and rosemary and it was OK. He also brought over a cornmeal mix and gave me this (he had TWO, for some reason, so I got one and he still had one) heavy pan:

CORN PAN

6) Yesterday I bothered to walk at a relatively steep incline on the treadmill for a while, and then I pretended to know what the hell I was doing with a kettlebell for a while. This is the first working out I’ve done in a while, because I’ve found it hard to interrupt wasting time and lolling around waiting for the SUN TO COME BACK! with such endeavors.

HOWEVER!

Groundhog Day is rapidly approaching, so I am reborn, like a groundhoggish phoenix (!!!)

Also, I found www.dietbet.com and am totally psyched about it for some reason. I opted out of Amanda and Matthew’s biggest loser thing they were joining for huge money a while ago because I knew at the point where I knew there was no way I could win, I’d just give up. This is different because you don’t have to WIN, you just have to lose more than 4% of your starting weight…so even if you don’t lose like 23 lbs, you can still make your money back (well, minus the 5 or 10% the website takes) and maybe then some if people in your challenge don’t lose 4%. I joined one of the cheaper challenges for February that has a ton of people in it to up my chances of winning more than my bet if I do lose 4%, and I started my own $100 challenge to make it expensive enough to hurt if I don’t lose the 4%. I’m not sure why this amuses me so much, but it does, so I’m going with it.

This week in Lady Rocket news

I worked nights this week, so I definitely don’t have much else to talk about besides Lady Rocket stuff.

On Wednesday, my Dad and I went up to Eastern Michigan, the grossest place in the world, with Bossman, Alex, and Ron the usher. Eastern is a much different team than they were last year, when they beat us all over the place – in Ypsilanti (one of the worst games ever), in Toledo, in Cleveland…Tavelyn James graduated, and their coach was fired for NCAA violations.

Eastern did get a new video scoreboard, which is a huge improvement over the burnt-out bulb scoreboard and video-projected-on-a-screen mess they had going on the last few years:

New Video Screen

Here are some other pictures from the game…one is Mariah Carson making a free throw (!):

EMUs Mariah!

A fun thing about games at EMU is that the UT fans outnumber the EMU fans. The Lady Rockets are currently ranked #22 in the country for average attendance. UT average attendance is 3,988 so far this year. The average attendance for EMU is 355.

<3

The Ladies won, I was tired from not sleeping enough during the day, and Bossman was ranting about how terrible we are going to be next year. LIVE IN THE NOW!

I made a deal with Kim that I would only watch Nicko the cat while they were in New York if she and Jack went to a Lady Rocket game, and today was the day. Jack has turned into a bit of a Nervous Nelly, or perhaps more accurately an Anxious Amos, but he did seem like he enjoyed parts of the game. Here he is with Rocky, in a picture that Rocky himself retweeted(!):

Winter Doldrums

It’s cold and gross and Ohio-like here. The only thing interrupting my slothy despondency is Lady Rocket basketball.

We’ve been to BG’s Stroh Center a few times now, and this past Sunday we took my Dad and Brian’s parents to watch the Ladies’ Battle of I-75. Our seats were too far up for much picture-taking, but here’s a picture of Naama to commemorate our victory:

PheNaamanal

(PS Chiara has been campaigning to make me miserable lately by reminding me how little Naama time is left for us, and I can’t stand it.)

Here are some other non-cat-related recent things (spoiler: Cat post coming soon).

Here’s my super darling-looking friend Anthony looking very similar to the fancy diaper ad baby in the upper right:

Here’s a soothing manatee (http://calmingmanatee.com) who is trying to remind me not to wallow in fatty fatness downward spiralness, but the winter is hard to overcome, even for a manatee:

Grumpy Cat.

True Fact.

This year is new.

Lights Before Christmas typically runs through New Year’s Eve, but they decided to do an encore this weekend…I know they were advertising it pretty heavily on Twitter and Facebook, but I don’t know how much regular advertising they did…but I know the encore was mentioned in a Blade article yesterday about the Lights’ record-setting attendance this year – 179,267 visitors.

We invited my dad and my brother to go with us last night, even though it was pretty cold (wind chill = 9 degrees) outside. It was super-crowded when we went mid-December, so I expected at least short lines. I bought our tickets online so we could avoid those lines, but we walked right into the zoo and enjoyed the Zoo without much company. My dad hadn’t been to the Zoo in a long time – probably since we last went as a family, which would have been quite a few years ago. I can’t wait to take him back in the summer so he can see more animals…though the aquarium being closed for 2 more years seems crazy to everyone.

We took him through the new Tembo Trail, but just like everything else, it kind of sucks in the winter. Here’s some elephant ENRICHMENT!:

Elephant Enrichment!

Here are some pictures of different animal light displays…many of which are VERY FAMILIAR to those of us from the Toledo Zoo area:

Sea Turtle Sea Turtle Santa Birds! Yukon Christmoose Butterflies Frogger

I enjoy Bats! Bats! Bats!:

BATSBATSBATS

My dad said I looked like I was going ice fishing, and I’m not sure what that even means, because it was freaking cold. Should a person going to the Lights encore NOT look like they could go ice fishing at any second? I don’t know. We did some ducking into buildings to warm up and so that my dad could stroke the beautiful woodwork in the reptile house. We also went into the Museum building to see the trains. The trains (and the train people) are probably primarily the same ones from when I was little:

Train with bonus lady

Here’s a picture that sort of shows how big the train setup is…the sign says that it takes the train people 100+ hours to set everything up. It’s so fancy:

Train

(Additionally, It’s also sad that the new train stuff they can buy seems to all be ads for shitty shit like a little storefront of a Walmart Supercenter or Menards.)

I wanted to take a picture of all the “Dancing Trees” lit up when one of their songs ended, but my camera battery died…but that’s ok. That would have been over the top. I rather like this picture of a few trees elsewhere in the Zoo:

Cool Picture of Trees

Here’s the big tree – the one that was in the Top 10 most amazing Christmas trees in the USA – with 3 (or 30, depending on who I’m talking to, but really it’s 3) miles of lights on it:

Giant Tree

When we visited in December, it was crazy crowded everywhere around the big tree – you just had to wait for the herd to shuffle past it on the trail and only the most obnoxious people (not us) posed pictures with it in the background since everyone was packed in like sardines on the walkway and around the Conservatory lily pool (this was not helped by the Aquarium area being closed)…but this time, we had the tree to ourselves for a while, so I took some pictures. First a dark photo of my very favorite boys men:

Brian, Mattie, Dad

And a picture of me and Brian near some orbs:

Me and Brian

Which brings us up to date, I think.

I didn’t run the Midnight Special because when I went out there and picked up my shirt, I almost slipped in the parking lot…and then when I was sitting in my car waiting for it to be time to run, I saw somebody else actually fall…I kept thinking about the Wabash-Cannonball and dark and questionably-maintained it is and talked myself into coming home. I had been up for 24 hours at that point, because I’m a night shift spazzoid, so I came home and went to sleep for 3 hours before I had to be in to work my holiday…so it was probably for the best. Whatever, what a sissy.

It seems like every year I have to resolve to take better care of myself, because by this time in the winter, I’m a sunlight-deprived, carb-compensating, non-sleeping, but still slothy mess…and that’s where we are at again this year. If somehow I could show you a graph of my steps/day from fitbit over the last few years, the dip in activity in the late fall is SUPER-OBVIOUS…Going into the new year, I felt SUPER-DOOMY and resigned to a life of grossy gross fatness.

However, I’ve been eating Paleo the last few days (but caved like a PMSy spaz earlier today and had some ice cream) and using my SAD light, and I feel loads better (but that could be from having a human schedule again, post-holiday) and more optimistic. I forgot how sleepy I was the first while of eating paleo…it’s kind of nice. It starts pretty immediately and was super great when recovering from night shift. And, even though it had only been 2-3 days of strict paleo, I felt prettttty gross after eating the ice cream…so back to the cave, with a bolstered ‘tude, for me. I need to find some more recipes that sound both delicious and doable for us…or eat lots of eggs, I suppose.

I’ve been really into logic problems again lately. Try some! www.logic-puzzles.org has free online ones, or there’s at least one iPad app (Puzzle Baron Logic Puzzles). As promised, I am taking a Facebook vacation, which though I’m mostly cut off from the outside world, is pretty nice.
